View Full Version : Dead mouse near furnace Question

I have searched this forum using the term "mice" etc.
I just saw a dead mouse near the furnace. It looks like this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mus_musculus

I also read this thing about mice:
http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef617.htm

-House is 2-story, built in 1991, both furnaces in basement.
-Doors are always closed.
-Garage doors always closed.
-Windows have screens.
-Fresh air intake have screens.

-Top of furnace/fireplace flues (above roof) have intact screens (I checked with binoculars).

Attic: 2 access panels closed completely. Last time I was up in the attic, no evidence of dead mice.

So I am at a loss where the mouse came from and died next to the furnace. This was the only dead mouse I have seen since owning this home in 2005.

1. Any ideas where they come from? I would think not from the HVAC system ductwork (all metal ductwork).

2. Has anyone tried the "high frequency ultrasound device"?
http://www.yoursecurity.us/pest.htm

For now I guess I'd use poison pellets.

TIA

Your joking right. A mouse could have squeezed through almost anywhere. get some traps where there is one there is 10.

Good Luck

I've pulled eight from my home this winter. It's cold outside and they will find a way into your home if they are in your area.

I live in the middle of a cow pasture that is now a subdivision.

Oh, the joys of clean, county living.

Buy poison and traps. They love peanut butter and Townhouse crackers. They can't resist it.

I was told a mouse can squeeze thru a hole no bigger than a dime - so you may just have a void in your attic / walls etc.

I was told by an exterminator, hell bent mice can even come up sewer pipes.

Mice are also very quick --- maybe he just made his way in while you were bringing in the groceries.

On the poison .... it makes them thirsty and "on paper" makes them go to the sewer, or outside to find water & die... just remember, if your home IS sealed up & he can't get out - you have a rotting mouse somewhere.

I'd use a trap or Hire a cat.

Try keeping a clean house instead of living like a slob and the mice will disappear!

LMAO! Well said. Go around the foundation of the house and use "great stuff" or mortar to fill any areas where mice may get through.

I surely hope you are joking.

We have an extremely clean home.

It's simply a matter of the little critters wanting a warm place to live, and we happend to be right in the middle of their field.

Just came across this:
http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/pchousemouse.htm
For now I will focus on Prevention and Control as mentioned in this article.

But...Can mice gets in through HVAC system?
(Flue, ductwork, fresh air intake)

They can get through a crack 1/16" thick.
Hire an exterminator to set traps and keep them away if you are that worried about it.
I probably kill at least 2-3 mice a week in my house, but my wife has a cat that brings them in!

Are you thinking of a business card w/ a picture of a mouse on it?

They're that flat after I stomp them, but that gets icky. Live capture is more fun, for humans as well as cats.

After putting out poison in crawl one showed up, I took it before cat caught it and ecsorting it way way outside.

I like the glue traps, myself. Sometimes I'll even splurge and get the rat glue traps..much bigger. The mice will get stuck and make all kinds of racket. Usually find 'em still alive. When I catch 'em alive, my dog likes lookin' at 'em. One time, I found one that looked like he tried chewing his leg off to get out. If there's any way I could have unstuck him, I would have...give the little feller credit for havin' heart, know what I mean? Also, finding them still alive creates all kinds of opportunities for fun. you know those vending machine carousels that are refrigerated?, push the button and the thing turns?, The small "mouse" glue traps fit in there real nice, then turn the carousel so it's moved to the back, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!! not that I've done that or anything....

Unless you build a house on stilts, they can come into your house ANYwhere. I use the Tomcat bait/poison around the exterior and in my crawlspace, plus I always check for openings to seal up with foam...that seems to work well...probably much to the consternation of my cats! >^..^<
