Hi All
I had a Heil HVAC packaged AC with heat stripes installed today. Model PAF3. It was put in place of a old 18 year old carrier heat pump.
The AC works fine, but cant seem to get the heat element to work... Installer is confused as to why heat wont work. Have it hooked up to a Rite Temp thermostat.
Possibly wired wrong? I dont know. Tested to see if electricity was getting to the elemebt and there is power there, just wont turn on?
Also is a PAF3 and PHF3 the same thing?
Any advice? Please help. Its cold out there! haha

from looking at the parts list the paf appears to be
a straight air unit & strips would be only source of heat.
phf would be the heatpump

Did you read site rules?
How in the world can we possibly tell what your installer did or did not do?
Was this a licesned istaller?

i am sorry.
i am not looking for a do it yourself.
i guess i am just asking opinions on if anyone had any experience with this or could shed some insight.
if a heat strip will generate enough heat, is it a common problem, does it sound like a wireing issue, or possibly a thermostat, ect
just looking for thoughts.
i would never open the unit and do it myself.
yes he is licensed, but this type of application is not very common in MA. more of a southern thing from what i understand.

Too many possible causes.
If we listed them, then we would be breaking the DIY rule.
Now for the bad news.
You replaced a heat pump, with a A/C with electric strip heaters, your electric bill is going to sky rocket.
You might want to see about getting that heat pump if thats what you originally contracted for.

yeah i think you are right...
i am located on the top floor of my building and have lived here for 2 years, so with heat rising, and good sunlight, heat has not been all that much of a issue. I guess i just need it to be a bit more comfortable. the company that delivered it claimed that witht the size of the strip and the blower system, it should hea the unit up quickly and run minimal. i am hoping that the heat strips will not burn a hole in my pocket.
the installer had to stop working on it today. it gets dark at like 4 here, and he ran out of daylight. hopefully he will get more sleep than me tonight and come back with the answer tomorrow.
currently i have a pit in my stomach as i feel i have spent alot of cash and i dont even have heat...

don't spook him.
replacing a heat pump with auxillary electric heat
with AC and electric strip heat is like replacing Carmen Electra with one of the Golden Girls.

Weather it uses 10 KWH's of elecric in 10 minutes, or 25 minutes, Your electric bill for heat will be the same.
What is your electric rate.

he got it working today. well half of the strip. looks like power was the issue.
im not sure on the rate of electricity, i know that prior to the new install in the winter months i was using about 900-1100 kwh per month.
will have to keep a eye on it and see how much it changes...
seemed to heat the apartment up quickly and didnt run all that much. possibly it is more efficient?
