I have a two story 3100 sq-ft house in the Chicago area and I have received 2 quotes for a furnace and A/C. The first was for the following Trane products: XV90 TUY100R9V4W Furnace and an XR14 4TTR4042A1000A A/C. The second was for the following Lennox products: G61MPV-60C-110 furnace and an X15-048-230 A/C. The Trane A/C is 3.5 tons and the Lennox is 4.0 tons. The waranty is much better with the Lennox 15 Yr parts & labor versus 5 yr parts and 1 yr labor. Both contrators are reputable and have been in business in the area for a long time.

Are the A/C units sized right for my size home?

Are the systems comparable?

Is the price for a high efficiency furnace worth it?

I am leaning towards the Lennox due to the better waranty and slightly better price.

Thanks in advance.

Can't tell on sizing. Only a dealer who measured walls, windows, doors, checked insulation and ran a load calc can tell.

They are similar equipment.

90+ is very wise in Chicago. Enjoying the snowstorm? :D

The Lennox dealer is bundling in an extended warranty. Find out who is backing it? If Lennox or Equiguard, you are fine. If the dealer is backing it, forget it.

The G61MPV is a great furnace and the XC15 is the quietest condensing unit that i've heard. The most important part is to make sure you use a reputable dealer.

The parts on the furnaces are not cheap to replace, so make sure you get a good warranty with whatever your decision is.

You might conside changing the Lennox AC condenser to a 2 stg 4 ton heat pump model assuming you have reasonable electric rates. Same would be true for the Trane proposal. Just a thought.

Good LucK!

Both are good system.

Ask dealers if they are able to get parts fast if they don't have it in stock of thier service van.

Sounds like a lot of A/C, they do a manual-j on the home?

Since I don't know what a manual-j is, I assume they didn't do one.

Thanks for all the help.

Manual J is a load calc done on YOUR home for equipement sizing. You can download the home owener's verison above for $50 if you want to make sure you are getting a right sized equipement.

I would have to agree, the lennox x15 is very quiet,However Trane also makes a very good system.I would strongly recommend having a load calculation done before the install.I have worked with lennox for the past 6 years ,and have been very satisfied.

The Trane warranty isn't competitive, and a heat pump in Illinois would be brutal even with combustion auxillary heat.

With regards to the warranty...if you pair any Trane XL Condenser with a Trane Furnace you will get 10 yrs on Parts/compressor. In most cases the Labor warranty is provided by the installing company, not by the manufacturer. You can however, purchase extended warranties from the manufacturer that will include labor. Some companies will just buy the extended warranty and work it into the price.
