Tax Credit / Does this system qualify?

Just had a Trane Xl16i heat pump installed and I assumed I would qualify for the Federal Tax Credit but I don't see it on the Trane list on their website. I called Trane and they said it did not qualify. The person I spoke to on the phone was not very helpful and did not seem very knowledgable.

ARI Ref# 548659
SEER Rating 17.00
HSPF Rating 9.2

Where can I get the EER rating and how do I determine if this system qualifies? I can't belive the single stage trane 15 seer heatpump qualifies and their more effient 16i and 19i do not.

I just got a call from my contractor and he states that the EER rating only applies to single stage heat pumps and since the 16i is dual that it is not applicable. Is that right? and if so, does this system qualify? My contractor maintains that it does qualify but I obviously want to make sure before I claim the credit.

I have it from the manufacturer, not sure where you can get it. But those are the specifics on your matched system. This is for a 4TWX6036A1000A and a 4TEE3F40A so I'm not sure if it really helps you or not.

While the efficiency is impressive on this system, the EER has to be 13 so that kills it.

Baldlouie, thanks for the reply, however, I have noticed that most of the systems that Trane certifies as eleigle for the tax credit list EER's under 13. None of them are below 12.5 so it looks like everything abouve 12.5 is being rounded up to 13. Do you have any knowledge of this? I was told by my contractor that my system would qualify for the tax credit. I am not very happy with what I have found out so far. If the EER can be rounded up, I don't understand why Trane would not certify this setup. They have not certified any XL16i or XL19i heat pumps.

A/C split system is only 12.5 eer for tax credit, heatpump is 13.

The tax credit thing is screwy IMO. That equipment matchup is a prime example of why.
The tax credit is there to encorage people to upgrade to more energy efficient systems.
That systems actual real energy usage for both cooling and heating is significantly lower than the majority of systems that qualify for the tax credit, yet it doesn't qualify...

Are there any current heat pump models that qualify for this rebate? I just checked and it doesn't look like my new system qualifies either. It's not a big deal since the rebate is pretty small anyway, but it seems stupid to enact a tax rebate that nobody can take advantage of...although it wouldn't be the first stupid thing our government has done!

Yeah, the government has stupid down to a science...

The idea of the credit is to get people to put in more efficient systems so less energy is used, but the way it is set up, you can put in a straight cooling system with electric heat and qualify for tax credits, but if you put in a heat pump you are SOL on the credit...

So why wouldn't that trane unit qualify?

Because it is less than 13 EER
