View Full Version : Fluke 116, Time to Upgrade?
I've been using a Fluke 16, how is everyone finding the new 116? Worth the upgrade, or should I hold off until my 16 breaks (more like I break my 16). Anyway, any experiences would be great.

Look at the Fluke 87-V. You'll love it.

Don't wait til your 16 breaks, it may never, lol. I have been using the same 16 since they first came out. Not one problem with it and it has NOT lived a pampered life.
I'm gona upgrade to a 116 soon, mainly for the better display and true RMS. Maybe I'll order one today.

Nice meter, but its kinda big and heavy vs the 116, and the 87 doesn't do anything needed for troubleshooting that the 116 doesn't do.
Well Im not a real good one to know the answer to that but I thought I would throw my opinion in anyway.
I havnt studied up on the fluke 116 other than see a few pictures on it. I guess Im not one to want to buy pretty much the same thing as I have had before. As fast as this stuff improves and changes , I like to try new and differant things, even if that means differant brands.
I know a lot come in and say FLUKE is the only way to go. I have a lot of fluke meters and I like them, only thing is I have other brands and I like them too. Just like a furnace ........ they all have their good parts and bad parts.
As the subject has come up in a lot of post before this ...... what do you really need ????? I know a lot of times I think I gotta have the best thing out there even tho I would never use those features.
Ok for the guys that need a lot more than I do, I dont blame them for buying the most expensive meters. For me in all the years I have been doing hvac , I just havnt been doing anything I need something way out of the ordinary, probably being Im only doing residental and small comercial.

That is true. If the 116 was out when I was looking to buy a meter I probably would have bought it instead. The 87 does have a lifetime warranty though. That may come in handy one day. Also the 87 is high impedance so it picks up ghost voltages, where as the 116 has a low impedance selection to eliminate ghost voltages. How much is the 116 anyways? I might sell my 87 and buy the 116...
Makes you wonder why they warranty some for life and others just for 3 years. Is there a big difference in quality?

I had a 16 and a 322 clamp meter as my main meters. I went out and bought a 902. Now out come the 116. What difference other than the clamp have between the 902 and the 116.

For one thing, since the 902 only tests below 10kOhms, you can't test thermisters with it.
i just bought a fluke 902 to replace my fieldpiece sc 76.
few things i gotta say; the leads don't store as nicely ( you gotta take em' off.)if you want to measure temp, or amps, you gotta take them off. resistance isn't guite there. the jaw desing makes it harder to grap leads as it is with the fielpiece. no non contact voltage. and the carrying case just kinda sucks. not to mention you need the fluke adapter to most of the fluke temp probes. i bought a fluke pipe clamp and had to buy a damn adapter to use it.
few good things, it responds very fast, allthou it lacks the audible alarm when over 30v (can make troubleshooting easier), and the green backlight is somewhat nicer than the blue the new fielpiece has.
i'm going to return the fluke and pick up a fielpiece sc 77.
