Other than making room for an inspection access to clean the underside of the coil does anyone know if there is an optimum distance from the bottom of the A coil to the hot air plenum outlet of the furnace for maximum cooling efficiency?..........thanks

A standard in our industry is 20% diverging 30% converging angles to ensure no static issues.

The peak of the a-coil should not protrude more thn three inches into the trunk connector/takeoff.
Optimumally there should be one inch clearance from the pan form each surface on the longest demension.
These are simplified and very general insatll practices but in no way replace a good working knowledge of airflow and duct design. Every job should be considered on it's own merits.
