a few months back i was offered a job at a mfg plant as a in house hvac guy. i declined as they wanted me to take a pay cut and they wanted me to give my two weeks and let them call my manager before the deal was finalized. i had another opertunity crop up and again they would like to talk to my manager before finalizing the deal.
what is going on???? who would quit there job to let there new empolyer call there current boss. you could get canned for looking for a new job and loose out on the new job for one reason or another.

I concur
Everyday I see and hear about these contractors doing this crap to employees, or in this case potential employees, I count my blessings that I have one hell of an awesome employer and I am anchored to my job.
This crap is, well... Crap.

Sounds nuts ...
sounds like they'll get a great tech...
I know managers that would recommend a problem tech just to get rid of them and make them someone else's problem ....and they would badmouth a fantastic tech because they are upset and feel betrayed because he wants to leave and move on

Why not just fire the problem Tech?

Just seems very dangerous to allow a potential employer to talk to your current employer. Best case scenario you boss understands this is a business and treats it as such worst case scenario well you quit your new employer calls your soon to be old employer and you get screwed
Wow! This reminds me why I should be so glad to have worked where I do for the last 28 years. Before this job I was where you probably are right now. I saw a few 'cutthroat' kind of games out there where people got hurt and reputations got ruined just because someone didn't like someone else. It had nothing to do with their working ability, just personalities. That's just wrong!!!
I'm sorry it's part of human nature.

I'm happy where I'm at but it doesn't mean I don't keep an eye out for a better Opertunity. But I wouldn't risk losing it for something not guaranteed. That was my point. I always thought talking to a new hires employer was off limits during the hiring process.

I'd say they can shoved it up theirs. it will cost you the job, told the hiring manager that it's all confidential. if he wanna talk to your current boss, there better be a signed iron clad deal. because most likely once them talking to your current employer you will b a goner. they must just follow the newest trend that these business schools doled out every now and then. how old is this HR person?

The one job I turned down it was a lady about 30 years this recent one never even got that far. He asked in an initial email to be able to talk to my employer. I promptly told him to pound sand.

Isn't it illegal for an employer to give any information other than yes he worked here, yes he works here or no he his is no longer employed here?
Ya,. Its illegal but what's going to stop them.

The problem is not with the employer bad mouthing you, it's the possibility of getting laid off/fired due to looking at another job before having something lined up.

Exactly!!!!!!! And what if your new job falls through. That's why I turn all these people down. To many variables.

I Guess they aren't meant to be. It's always great to have a good job when another one comes along. If they don't impress the hell out of you than you just say no thank you. My criteria is pretty strict really wouldn't take anything that wasn't with one of the big three but I like to listen.

What can be done?

What can be done? Well, I could go on a diatribe for hours on that question alone, but will just write a short story. There was a time, about 120 years ago, give or take, where american businessmen did anything they could to make more money, while trying to keep the worker down. The forced longer hours, for less pay, and when workers stood up to fight, hired agencies to protect their interests. One of the most notables was the pinkertons, said to be better armed than the federal governemnt. They were for hire by anyone with enough money, to do anything they wanted.
A great many businessmen, who "couldnt afford" to pay workers fair wages, could afford to hire the pinkertons, and others, to strike bust, and force workers to work long hours for low pay.
A new attack has been happening right under your nose. Jobs have been moving offshore for years, due to the so called high cost of doing business here. usually this is done by short term "turnaround specialists" who break businesses apart piece by piece, rape and pillage by taking huge salaries and bonuses, and then move on. Everyone thinks its great, how these guys are killing jobs with the storke of a pen. The problem is, it kills jobs at all levels. This country needs entry level jobs, up to management and ceo's.
I have done a lot of reading on this. Their motto is "ship the low wage jobs offshore, and replace them with high paying jobs". The mentality is "we would rather sit in an office and sell stuff made overseas, than actually make stuff here". Problem with that is, what do the folks who work those jobs do? The low wage people are the ones hurting, not the sales guys sitting in the office.
We currently have a presidential candidate, who is a financial supporter of doing exactly this, offshoring manufacturing jobs. If you agree with that philospophy, he is your guy. I happen to disagree with it, and he isnt my guy, although the other guy isnt much better. In one case happening right now, not only are they offshoring jobs from Illinois, they are forcing the employees about to lose their jobs to teach the chinese flown in how to do them. They cannot afford to kepe jobs here, but can afford to fly people in halfway across the world to learn how ot do them.....
What can YOU DO?? Stop listening to the news media, stop believing everything they SAY, and research their actions. This goes from your local mayor on up to the presidential election, and everywhere in between. Figure out what is important to you, and vote.
I have been involved in a couple of manufacturing plant moves BACK to the good ole USA. WHY? why if its soo cheap would anyone do that? simple, overseas, they steal your intellectual property, they run production at night and steal your product, the counterfit items and sell as real, an so forth, all in the name of stealing american profits and ideas. If you dont believe it, do the research, there is a long history of asian market companies doing exactly this. Even as far as the internet, even google got hoodwinked by the chinese.

Such a true statement if only everyone could see the big picture I do!

I do my share of reading, via financial mags, newspapers, and internets. I grew up poor and was able to help myself become a small business owner. I am far from being rich, but do ok. I firmly believe our system is broken. The politicians are stealing our economy right out from under us, along side of their rich buddies. This is true of both parties. look at what politiicans have become. most retire rich, and then go on to be lobbyists, selling bills of goods ot their buddies for millions more.
The only way we can change things is to kick out the guys stealing from us, and vote for guys who who have their hearts in it for the right reasons. This means figuring things out in the locla primaries, not in the general election when we are left with two talking heads. By now, its too late.
I wont go political, other than to say we NEED to be better informed, and exercise our right ot vote, instead of sitting home and *****ing on election day. one in two doesnt show up to vote in most cases. its no wonder the politicians dont care about us.

Some of my Union acquaintances never figured there is also an Employer's union.
They will GET YOU FIRED AND THEN HIRE YOU AT A LOWER RATE BECAUSE THEY THINK YOU WILL BE DESPERATE.
Solution: Don't be desperate.

Let me throw this into the mix.....uh....HOW ABOUT BEING HONEST WITH YOUR PRESENT EMPLOYER????? Okay....okay....it sounds horribly trite. But I've had employees who were not happy for some reason and they came and talked to me about it. Sometimes I can try and make them happy, other times I just wish them well and let them go somewhere else. A few times we've lost really good employees simply because they got a really good offer from someone who would actually be a really good employer. And we hated to lose them, but couldn't come close to matching such an offer. Be honest with your employer, he'll (or she'll) appreciate the honesty and if they don't, then seriously start looking elsewhere. But remember who fed you (and yours) the last how many years and be honest with them about what you feel about your job!! If they are an ethical employer, they appreciate your comments, and notice your ethics!

I have seen to many people laid off or fired for being honest with their employer. Its great that you're not like that, but many of them are. I will say, its hard to come out and ask for a raise, or anything else for that matter from your boss.

It's not about being honest. The question is what changed that makes a potential employer want to put you in a position that can get you fired before commiting to hire you.

i have met many people who have inherited companies and would not have a clue how to service any of their clients needs but have the attitude that their employees owe them when actually the owners should be greatful for them

That is interesting. I know that in California (I thought it was nationwide), if you call an ex-employer of a potential new hire, all they could say is whether you worked there or not. I may be wrong on this and hopefully someone will correct me if I am.
The can not say if you were a good or bad worker or if you were late a lot. Only that you had worked there and for how long.
