I have a Gordon Ray tube heater where the mercury flame sensor will not close and pass power on to the main valve. The sensor is in the pilot flame. The flame looks good I have tryed a new flame sensor still won't close tryed another sensor in a neighboring unit which worked in it but not in this unit. I have ruled out the sensor. I checked the pilot assembly/orifice all appears good. The gas valve appears to have no pilot adjustment only main flame. How hot does the damn thing need to get to close? Is there a alternative I don't know about without making alot of changes?

did you ohm the sensor to see if it is switching? could be a bad valve. they do need to be pretty hot and do take a while to switch over.

Check continuity through the pilot valve in the gas valve. You may need a new gas valve if your mercury flame switch works in another unit but not in the one you are working on.

could also be the relite control
those sensers have a time on could be up to 90 seconds before they open the valve depending on witch one is used

The alternative is getting a tech to diagose it.

I have ohmed out the sensor and it does not close. I have waited about 10 mins. knowing they take awhile to close the contacts. I just don't think it is getting hot enough to put enough pressure on the diaphram to close the contacts. I thought about drilling the orifice out 1 size bigger to get more gas through but first wanted to check the temp of the pilot on a good unit and this unit.

Best advice you've gotten all night, especially after your last idea.

Is a mercury flame switch another name for a radiant flame sensor?
