Not if you do resi. Commercial is still going good. But the company I was at didnt have any commercial accounts. It was lots of home warranty work.

If you got laid off you can collect unemployment, sounds like you got fired since they didn't give you a two week notice.

No company I've worked for has given two weeks notice when they laid people off. Guess its a state thing.

Did they give you a notice or just drop it in your lap as you waddled into the shop?

You were probably too good for home warranty work... they were not getting enough call backs!

All kidding aside, sorry to hear about this. I hope you find new work soon.

I kinda saw it coming a few weeks ago, but it was still a surprise. I was already floating out applications. I did apply for unemployment when I got home. And those home warranty companies are stingy. They don't pay for anything. Here's the funny thing though. I somehow got out of the shop with my gas card, the key to my truck. a stack of company invoices, and I was told to hang onto my work shirts. And a promise to get called back if it gets busy again. I was just the low man on the totem pole.

It's hunting season. Take the unemployment for a bit and go have some fun. Then saddle up and do a walk about to every shop in your area. Just walk in with resume in hand. Some one gonna put you on. Good techs, contrary to most service managers opinions, are not a dime a dozen. Seriously though. Your in north TX!! Big deer!! Alot of them!! Go hunting!!

As much as companies hate to do it two weeks notice for a layoff is a no-no. A disgruntled tech could do a lot wrong to a company if he knows he only has two weeks. I know that some are different but not the norm.Good luck in finding a job. Start searching commercial even if you lack the experience. I would not wait to start looking there are lots of unemployed people out there looking. Atmosphere in commercial is much better. Home warranty work is not much fun.

If they let you walk out with gas card, and uniforms then you are truly "laid off" and they'll call you back when work picks up. Me? I'd not want to rely on a home warranty type company. Look for work, but enjoy hunting hogs!!

Professional members are held to a higher standard. You owe an apology.

From the rules: 5. A Professional Member is allowed one unprofessional post in anger or belittlement, Union or Non-Union bashing but take heed, your next post must be a follow up with an immediate meaningful apology or you get 30 days. Your follow up post time is critical. If in doubt, don't make the first post.

Did they just give you a pink slip or did they give you a severance package then a layoff?

If not then I would be going to your employer and asking for a severance package and if they don't give you something then I would speak to a lawyer.

back in 09 I was laid off with out notice and no severance package offered. the company was cough for fraud for billions of dollars.. almost 3,000 people national wide were laid on at once.. a law firm contacted us and asked if that can represent us and sue our prev employer.. about 2 years later we won and we all got checks for 12 weeks of pay. the company I worked for didn't give us any warning of the mass lay off and didn't give us a severance package.

This is directly from the department of labor this may or may not apply to you in your situation:

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs.
Employee entitled to notice under WARN include managers and supervisors, as well as hourly and salaried workers. WARN requires that notice also be given to employees' representatives, the local chief elected official, and the state dislocated worker unit.
Advance notice gives workers and their families some transition time to adjust to the prospective loss of employment, to seek and obtain other jobs, and, if necessary, to enter skill training or retraining that will allow these workers to compete successfully in the job market.
Generally, WARN covers employers with 100 or more employees, not counting those who have worked less than six months in the last 12 months and those who work an average of less than 20 hours a week.
Employees entitled to advance notice under WARN include managers and supervisors as well as hourly and salaried workers.
Regular federal, state, and local government entities that provide public services are not covered by WARN.
The Department of Labor's (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) administers WARN at the federal level, and some states have plant closure laws of their own. A State Dislocated Worker Unit Coordinator can provide more information on notice requirements in a specific area.
DOL has no enforcement role in seeking damages for workers who did not receive adequate notice of a layoff or received no notice at all. However, they can assist workers in finding a new job or learning about training opportunities that are available.
