My 32 year old Weil-McLain has finally died and I now need to decide between replacing it or converting to hydro air.

We had central air installed last spring and so the handler and duct work is in place. We will need a few additional returns on the first floor, but otherwise it will work.

The other option is to simply swap out the WM for a new model and stick with steam.

The hydro air solution is about twice the cost, but it will provide us with two zones and likely better distribution of heat than we get with steam. On the other hand, the steam does work and it is 50% of the cost.

What do you suggest?

IMO if you have a contractor that knows steam stay with that. I really think it helps the home maintain it's character and charm.

On the other hand if you would prefer to get rid of the steam rads the hydro air is a viable option and the existing zoning may help save some money on energy costs.

I'd say go hydro, IF the ductwork is well insulated in the attic and the loss of power is not an issue, to prevent freezing. Best bet would be if air handlers were VS or multi-speed.

The ductwork in the attic is well-insulated. And we have a variable speed air handler.

Steam if you want comfort. Heat from above won't be near the comfort of the steam radiators!
