Variable Speed Question

I have a Trane heat pump with a variable speed gas furnace. In order to take advantage of the V/S feature, does the fan need to be left in ON or will it work in AUTO? I've only had this system for a couple of days, left the fan in AUTO, and it seems like when the a/c kicks in, it's all or nothing. It doesn't ramp up or down, just full speed on or off.

Got the installer coming out tomorrow to check it out. Just would hate for it to be something obvious like the fan switch is in the wrong position. FWIW the thermostat is a Honeywell IAQ.

More likely the installer doesn't have the dip switches set right.
Or not wired correctly.
