View Full Version : High efficience vs. mid with DC
I am considering purchasing a new system for our house. The house is approx. 2000 squ feet two story. It is not a very airtight house.
I am comparing a mid efficiency two stage system with a DC fan motor with a high efficiency one stage system with a standard fan. I have been told that there will be an electricity saving in both summer and winter. The high efficiency two stage, dc motor is out of my price range. I am leaning to the mid. What do you experts think.

Where are you and how are your gas & electric rates? Do you run the fan all the time?
We are in Toronto, Ontario. Canada. No, I do not run the fan all of the time although it seems like the air conditioner is running most of the day in the summer. We do have really hot summers with moderate to severe winters depending on the year. The last few winters have not been very cold. Gas and hydro bills are in the range of just under 200 per month on average

Hard to answer your question with out information like where do you live ect.
Just like buying a new PC, (usually) the more you can spend the better the unit. In the sunbelt sometime we put the lesser "effiency" unit upstairs (usually bedroom use) and the more effient" unit downstairs (day use), that is if you have two units.
A properly installed high effeincy unit = comfort.
My 2 cents

I to have went through this,i live near windsor ontario and have just had a high eff lennox g61v and 13seer acx installed in july this year.First of all take care of your house because your still loosing the efficience of this unit leaking out of your house ,it is not that expensive to do yourself if possible. First go around your house and chaulk all the windows inside and out, gasket all the plugs in your house check your doors and replace the seals, and if possible rent a machine from homedepot or any hardware store and and get the foam vent and prepare your attic and then blow in the insulation with help to fill the machine and blow it in yorself it took 3hrs to blow in 38 bags saved myself about $1000 to do it by myself. Here is the the BEST PART ,THERE IS A REBATE FROM THE GOVERMENT BECAUSE ALL THIS AC UNIT ARE ALEAST 13SEER THEY WANT A 14SEER EFF TO GET A $500 rebate that runs between july to sept for the next 2 yrs take care of your house first if possible. And dont be afraid to get multi quotes dont get a hack.My unit was installed by a company with 28yrs experience and a paymenyt plan over 2yrs 0% and a ten parts and labour .TAKE YOUR TIME it one of the biggest investment to your house besides your window and thats another story.
