I have a 1500 sq ft home in phx az. My kitchen area is always warmer than the rest of my house. My air return is on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen. 2 months
ago I replaced my heat pump all in one unit and installed a york 3 ton unit. They told me when they installed the unit that I probably would need to add a return by the kitchen to fix the unequal cooling problem. The home was built in
1970. Who can I call to have evaluate my home and what is this evaluation called? thanks for any help

thanks for your help. I just want to make sure when I spend the money to upgrade my duct work that it will be done correctly.

FYI,if the kitchen is not separted by doors that are closed ,adding a return near it(in the kitchen violtes most building codes),will do nothing to improve the situation, you'll need additional supplies,IMHO.

why would that be a code violation?

It's a fire code issue.... in the event of a fire (in the kitchen) it would rapidly spread to the rest of the house.

In a practical sense - it keeps unwanted cooking odors from circulating in the home.

that makes sense. Would a return be ok in a dining room adjacent to the kithen? When I have someone come out to design and install my duct work is there a special type of company I should look for or just a certified a/c company?
thanks again for your help

It comes down to the opinion of the building inspector -- if the location near the kitchen is the best the building will accomodate - that should pass.

Seek out an experienced HVAC contractor - they'll keep you out of harms way
