View Full Version : Do controller self-reset after power outages?

I have a house located in a community that has frequent power outages...particularly during the winter months.

An HVAC contractor who bid a new propane FHW boiler and DHW system, recommended against wall-hung condensing boilers due to their internal electronics (controls) needing to be reset after a power outage.

Similarly, he recommended against a Logmatic controller or Tecmar controller for the same reason...that if the house is frequently unoccupied for extended periods...that we would have trouble with the system not resttiing after a power outage.

We are planning to install a Buderus GA124-23 for baseboard FHW heat and a Rinnai Continuum 2520 for on demand domestic hot water. Are we being given good advice to avoid the more advanced electronics given our risk to power outages and people not being home for extended periods to manage resetting controllers?

Thx,

JB

How long are the power outages? I'd be more worried about freezing hydronic systems. If they're short, I'd rather invest in a UPS. I have a Tekmar 260 that doesn't require resetting when the power is killed. Now maybe some of the units with clock timers it might be an issue.

I'd also look into seeing if just the controller could be plugged into a small APC UPS. The burner and pumps would not run, but the controller would maintain configs
and go through it's motions. This might not be do-able with the Burderus controls if the gas valve and pump controls are intigrated into the same power source, but a Tekmar does have isolated dry contacts to turn pump and burner on.

Does the Tecmar 260 you mentioned provide outdoor temp reset? Since I'll have the Rinnai as "on-demand" hot water, the only functionality I would need from a controller is tocontrol the optimal burn rate of the boiler.

When we are away from home for extended periods, we leave the thermostats set to 55'. In you opinion, would their be savings in terms of propane consumption by adding a controller for the Buderus GA124? Doies the Tecmar 260 have it's own battery power....how is that it resets itself after power loss?

Thanks for you help....appreciate it.
