My new lennox 3 1/2 ton 13 seer a410 heat pump is going on the roof of my 3 story townhouse. The air handler is in the basement. I estimate the run of the lineset as about 45'. I am having a new lineset installed. Several people on this board suggested I need solenoid valves and oil traps. The contractor is NATE certified and a premier lennox dealer. He said the installation does not need oil traps or solenoid valves and said they're mostly for commercial applications which are greater than 50'. I really need to do something quickly.
Do I need solenoid valves and oil traps?
What happens if I don't add them to the linset?

I don't mean to be mean. But You are about to purchase a Lennox unit.
"You talked to the Lennox themselves, who designed the system and agreed of oil trap and solenoid."
That's all the advice you need.
If whoever disagree, fire him and get another. You have the money.

Installation instructions are there for a reason, have the installer read them and see if Lennox requires this on this type of installation.

Are there any lennox installers out there who could look in the installation instructions for model XP13-042-230 (a410 3 1/2 ton)heat pump with CBX32M42 air handler and see if the lineset installation instructions require traps where the heat pump is going to be on the roof and the air handler in the basement with a 35' or so vertical run from the heat pump to the air handler and then a 10' or so horizontal run (with a slight downward flow) from the entry area in the basement ceiling to the air handler.
