I thought I had finally decided on a new system for my 2900 sq.ft. single story home in FL…

5 ton Carrier Infinity 16 Heat Pump w/Infinity Fan Coil (15.3 seer)
Infinity Zoning and Controls (3 zones)
All new ductwork (designed for zoning)

I feel I have selected the best contractor in the area for this type of work. He seems very familiar with the Infinity system and zoning. But he threw me a curve ball today by suggesting an alternate set up.

2 ton Carrier Comfort 13 Puron Heat Pump w/Performance Series VS Fan Coil (14 seer)
3 ton Carrier Comfort 13 Puron Heat Pump w/Performance Series VS Fan Coil (14 seer)
All new ductwork (designed for 2 systems)

Original system is one unit for the whole house. Current fan coil is in the garage. Second one would have to go in the garage also (about 50 feet from the area it will cool). I really don't want a fan coil in the attic or to give up closet space.

The 2 options are about the same price. I asked about 2 infinity systems and he said that was way outside of my budget. He also said that 1.3 seer points is not a huge difference. He is not pushing either one, leaving it up to me.

Any opinions?

I have an Evolution 4 ton (same as Infinity) system with 4 zones and I am quite happy with it. It runs at half speed (2 tons) 90% of the time and the 4 zones gives precise temperature control. It also has the humidistat built in. I like the idea of less equipment ( 1 compressor and 1 air handler)

With most new homes today its becoming much better to install one system with zoning then is it to oversize by having two system.

On our 3000 sq ft 1.5 story home went with 2 Infinity VS furnace/Performance 13 SEER compressors. We chose to because of the nature of our design with a vaulted area in the middle of the house. It was also in our budget.

It was nice to have about a month ago when the master suite side was out for two days due to a micro-leak in the lineset inside that caused the Puron to go bye-bye. The other system kept the whole house cool enough by cranking it down to 73.

That being said, a properly zoned and installed system does have less gear to maintain.

As long as it's done right...of course.
