I inherited this system yesterday in my recently purchased home. There is no filter. I searched the net to find that it requires a 21.5 x 19.75 filter which doesnt appear to be a standard size. What are my options?
I really need a new cover too, which is 21" and one side has a broken latch. I didnt seem to locate one of those easily via Yahoo.

Call your local Carrier dealer. They can get the filter and the door from Carrier. The metal frame washable filter could also be fabbed pretty easily in their shop.
OR if you want a superior filter than the actual Carrier filter that comes with that model and you don't mind spending some ca$h you could have them install the 5" filter box atop the fancoil unit and use the media filter.
You'd still have to get a replacement door for the one that's there, or just use the one you have and zipscrew it shut.

Are you sure there aren't filter(s) at the return grille(s)??

There are no filters at the returns. I checked. Are you saying that there are no "standard" size filters that will fit this unit? I need to customize?
1.Any Carrier or Bryant dealer will likely have them instock. They are waskable and not that great of a filter.
2.You could order a case of throw aways ,custom sized to fit.
3.If the return grille(s) equal a larger area then the air handler filter, you could have filter grilles installed .
4.With proper testing for air flow,a 4" media filter could be installed in the reurn duct near the air handler.
I'm assuming the return grilles do not have a space for a 1" filter.

Yeah, thats what I figured. I really wanted a nice filter to throw in there, but its expensive to customize those. I suppose thats why there we no filter in there now. I see a few places online that custom make "good" filters, I guess Ill try doing that and get a box or two for a years worth.
Your local dealer/contractor ,may be able to get you the same,at a comparable price, including the shipping.
Be sure you have the exact measuremnets,or it may not fit at all, there are "springs" that hold it in place, you need to take that into account.

LOL - I see no springs either..yikes..I think it might be a good idea to get a trouble call out here. ;)
Depending on your location, might be some Fall "clean and check specials"and your coil and blower likely need cleaning.
