Whats the best way to protect my outdoor central air compressor for the winter. I read that the vinyl covers may lead to problems due to condensation. What other options are there? Thanks.

JUST PUT PIECE OF WOOD, SHEET METAL OR SOMETHING TO COVER OPENING ON TOP

Make sure your compressor heater is wired and operating. Do not shut the breaker off to the AC unit.

why not shut off if coverd till spring? around here units with cc heater attract mice who build condos alongside compressor with insulation they pulled from unit.

You should be able to turn the breaker to the unit off for the winter, as long as you turn it on well in advance of starting up the unit in the spring. It makes little sense to keep a crankcase heater running for 5+ months of off-season. As far as covers and condensation, I would use any cover as long as it does not completely cover the bottom of the condenser fins, this will allow air to circulate through the inside of the unit while still keeping out snow and debris. Many units are not covered and work just fine in the spring.

shut the breaker off and cover the top to keep snow and ice from getting inside. there is nothing in there that will be harmed by the cold weather. When you start it next summer make sure you turn the breaker on for at least 24 hours before starting it to allow the compressor to heat up to normal temp.
