View Full Version : Carrier ECM motor issues
I have a building I maintain with multiple Carrier gas furnace's. A few of these units have indoor blower motors fail yearly. I just replaced one two weeks ago and installed an in line surge protector on the motors wiring harness. The surge protector failed so I replaced it and as I was packing up and leaving the attic it failed again. This building apparently is prone to power surges, but the chief( this is a police dept) is starting to get ticked at replacing these expensive parts hence the surge protectors. Any ideas why this unit keeps blowing the surge proctor.

How you ever checked the TESP on any of these systems?
No but I'm going back in the AM and will check the system in working on. Building was built about 10 yrs ago and township had to take lowest bidder. Supervisor told me they held $25,000 on them.

Its funny that they held 25,000 on the original installer/contractor and they are upset that the systems are experiencing problems...Perhaps poor initial installation is the cause of these problems? Are the filter and systems properly maintained? Are the evap coils and blower wheel clean and free of dirt and debris?
If the systems TESP is high the older ECM blowers do not have a limit on the RPM's which cause motor module failure.

Wow I hate to be the guy working on that unit.
U better spend a whole day there to figure this out
Or he will be locking ur a$$ up

The systems have been maintained over the years. Coils are clean and filters are changed every three months. Checking TESP on this unit today. When the motors go this both the module and motor, both fail testing.

I agree with jimj
Check static
Your other problem might be your filter
What kind of filter are they using?
3 months might be too long
