How do you check a reversing valve for proper operation? How can you tell if one is stuck?

If it won't shift it's stuck

also you check temps on suction and discharge lines. Suction line temps should be the same as well as discharge. If you have 1 suction line @55* and the other @65* the rev valve is not all the way shifted. I believe the temp threshold is 3*

Energize valve then remove coil voltage. Do this a few times and you should hear a swoosh sound as it swaps.

Old trick, pull condenser fan and get head pressure up. Then let it rip.
