Customer called and said in the middle of the night the unit stopped cooling and the suction line was covered with ice at the heat pump all the way to the compressor.
Heat pump was just replaced due to compressor terminals arcing out and blowing the charge.
I suspect poor air flow but why didn't the old unit do that?
I would care more about why the new system is doing it. Low airflow could be a problem along with a number of others. Without more information anyone would only be guessing.

I'm going back out there now I suspect the charge is some how low but I don't see how because I weighed the charge exactly. The line set is 25 feet long roughly and I weighed out the recommended 72 ounces of charge. The evaporator is freezing up almost instantly though. The pistons is not clog so that pretty much just leave slow charge doesn't it?
You need to apply for Pro. You have the post count and you will get a lot more answers there. You need to be checking your SC, SH, IDWB, IDDB and delta T's.

That takes several weeks. I'll have it figured out by then.
If you take the reading you should know what the issue is. Try it!

So why didn't you fix it while you were there the first time?

if its freezing right away, look for airflow issues. and are you sure old one wasent doing that. you dont know who has been out there before they called you, when yall found the compressor. Anyway i would apply for pro, i dont see why you havent since you have the post count, unless you are not qualified?

Looks easy to me, go figure it out.
What's the Superheat, indoor wet bulb and sub cooling?

You should take his advice. You will never run across something you can't figure out again or know everything already? Or maybe give back to other who don't know everything....
What's your suction line temp and your liquid leaving temp at cu
So you have 68% humidity inside?

I added refer. Sh currently 30
26* is what I would be looking for, unless you have a factory chart
At 72 IDWB and 83ODDB that would be the case

I got it dialed in now. It was low on charge. I must have moved the hose on the cylinder when I was zeroing the scale.

Actually, no.
But, as much as we would like to help you, we don't do thins kind of point by point in an open forum like this.
Get the app in now, before you need another steer.....

4* Superheat won't freeze your line set. Charge isn't the issue.

It sounds like a residential unit, it could be poor air flow due to undersized return duct work (flex etc), very dirty filter or check it the line is freezing after the liquid line filter, it could be plugged once the compressor was changed. Another thing to look at is the txv, check if the lines freeze right out of it or if you have a system with orifice is the existing one the right one?

How long it takes varies by how busy the membership committee is. Often its only a few days. better to apply now, then not to have it the next time you want some aid.

Maybe I misunderstood, you said you had a 30 and someone else said should be 26.

I applied for pro. The system was under charged. It's working great now. As I said, I think I moved the hose when I zeroed the scale so it was reading low. I slowly added r-22 while checking superheat until I got it filled.

Or maybe there is a leak somewhere. ;)

Checked vigorously for leaks during nitro pressure check and evacuation. No leaks, no doubts.

Ok Protech you are above the guidelines of the forum learning curves, you gotta come to my jobs so I can walk away from those brass caps I always find leaking and no one believes me. With your confidence it would quite possibly give me that "no doubt" attitude as I find myself tip toeing away from those under charged units that just needed the caps to be tightened with my trusty old channel locks.
