View Full Version : Thieves are stealing my condensing units

I do about 50 to 60 residential home renovations every year. These are in less than desirable areas and the crack heads are stealing my condensing units. Bolting the cabinets to a slab doesn't work because once the crack heads realize they can't get it, they just vandalize it to submission. Iron cages work better, but I don't have a welder that can make these.

Do you guys know of anyone who sells a product for securing these units? Or, do you have any suggestions?

Install them on roofs or build a chainlinc cage around them with a padlocked door. Or, fence in the yard and get a couple of meanass german shepards.

If the bruthas want it bad enough though, their going to get it.

2 per month as a production schedule aught to get the price real fair.

find some bolts that are oh say 6 feet long. send them down thru the top of the unit, one on each corner and anchor the unit onto a concrete slab and set that slab into some cement. this way, your van cant even budge the thing!!!!!!!!!!!

It would still be stripped. They don't care about the base pan. The crack heads want the copper.

Is copper really worth that much? I would think for the amount of work involved you would make more money by getting a real job. Not to mention that you wouldn't have to worry about getting caught.

^^^^^^

I don't believe they're hiring crackheads at 7-11.

It is not hard to weld mild steel that you would need to make a cage. All you need is an inexpensive welder, a mask and some all purpose rod. Then practice a little. You'll find that you can get by welding. You won't be a certifed welder and the Navy won't hire you to build submarines. But you'll be able to secure a cu.

We have a Lincoln Welder for sale that would be just right for your purposes. E-mail me if you are interested.

Try a sign on the side of the unit that reads "LoJack protected"

You put one of these in there:

http://www.accutracking.com/

Just make the one it's installed in easy to steal. Put a cell phone in a plastic weathertight box with a charger. Get an email alert and call the cops.

Best way I found is to use hot/wire fence. We had crack-head breaking into shop and vans until we installed hot/wired fence. Then post signs warning to stay away from a/c units protected by device..

Dogs don't work we tried it with security company. (mean dogs)too.

Only other item would be closed circuit T.V. which is costly.

Rob,

I work for a HVAC contractor in Savannah and was wondering if you have come up with any deterents yet. I have customers calling about stolen units all the time.

Why can't you put that unit in last????
Once it becomes installed, it is the property owner problem then, unless you are the owner?

Then the steel cage is the only way to go!
Make it strong, a crackhead will do anything for a fix!
