what exactly does megging a compressor involve? probably a dumb question.

A mega-ohm meter and someone cranking it, clip it to you fingers and crank it a few time see hat happens. :D

You know I always thought it was when you hooked up a megger and you tried to determine how many megabytes are contained in the compressor.

Seriously, it's a procedure to test the insulation of the motor windings. If you don't know what you are doing, you could seriously injure yourself and damage the compressor. I would suggest finding an experience tech to show you the proper procedure.

it involves a megger and some trained to interpert the readings.

testing resistance between the motor coil windings and the frame. the meg meter puts out extremely high voltage so do not touch the meter leads.

The rule of thumb is 1000 ohms per volt is exceptible.
