Does anyone know why Carrier is using ECM modules on single speed blowers? Did a changeout recently, new Airhandler was an FC4DNF036 with a ECM variable speed module on it but was in fact a single speed blower. Makes for an expensive dang blower don't ya think.

It's an X13 motor and it needs to be returned to the distributor for evaluation.

Did you return it?

It is being used to improve efficiency. I've not had a failure...knock on wood.

In fact I did return it thinking it was a variable speed blower, knowing it wouldn't work with a single stage stat. 3 guesses as to what I got, yep another FC4DNF036 with an ECM module. I do renenber seeing X13 on the motor as well. carrier guy told me that I did in fact have the right model assuring me it would work. And it did, very well even. Im just wondering as to why such an expensive item on a single speed blower. How would it improve efficiency?
Teach me something.

It is NOT a ECM module. It is a GE X13 motor. The motor is a high effcient multi speed motor not variable speed.

Thanks, Ed.

Yeppers. It's an ECM, but it's not variable speed. Thus, improved operational efficiency.

Dealer Toolbox has some good information on ECM if you don't understand how they work.

Interesting plain, the module says GE ECM right on it. I know the motor isn't variable speed, but it has a DC powered ECM module. I was just wondering why that configuration.

Thanks Ed, gonna save that info.

OK, maybe I should have been more specific....I try to limit my technical responses in the Residential forum. You stated it was variable speed ECM and I was trying to let you know that it is not a variable speed motor. It is a high effcient multi speed motor that is being used to increase the effciency of the air handlers. The control of the motor is different from both variable speed and conventional PSC motors. This is easily seen on the wiring diagram.
