I have found the contractor that I want to go with for a furnace and a/c replacement. I am getting Amer Std dual-stage, var spd furnace paired to Amer Std a/c. My final decision is what a/c to get. The contractor will do either 410A or R22 based system. Without waiting for a while due to some units on backorder, available at this time are 13 SEER r22 unit or 14 SEER R410A unit. The price difference is about $1000.

Being in Canada, I will never pay for the SEER difference with only a 2-3 month cooling season. But, is it worth it to go with the 410A unit to future-proof myself for repairs/recharging? Of note, the contractor is providing a 10-year parts and labour warranty so I would not have to cover anything for the first 10 years. Am I gonna care if I still have an r22 unit in 10 years? My first inclination is to just go with the R22 unit especially with the long warranty given that functionally I will not see a difference.

Opinions??

gO with AmStd's Allegiance 13 or 14 R-22 refrigerant. I personally would go with the Allegiance 14 but either is fine and this idea that dealers/Manufacturers want to charge extra for R-410a is just bunk. You will have a great system if sized and installed correctly. I would include a whole house air cleaner cabinet.

Good LucK!

are there any rebates from the power company to help offset the higher cost?

What is the major difference with 14 Seer Am Std Allegiance a/c unit??

There are no rebates related to the use of the 410A.

The 14 is quieter with swept wing fan blad. Also use a scroll 2.5 ton and up where the 13 uses scroll only at 3 and 5 ton sizes.

Unless you are expecting a leaking system, what refrigerant you have doesn't matter. I sure wouldn't spend a grand just to get a SEER point and R410a in your area. If it leaks in 10 years, as you point out, it won't cost you anyway.

Do those advantages of the 14 SEER unit justify about $200 in additional cost in your opinion?
