On a recent AC service I was told the coil installed in my house was a 4 ton (inside) coil. The rest of the system is a 2 ton. I was also told the system was over charged to compensate for the larger coil, as a result the compressor could be damaged and should be replaced. Is there any problems with this set up? If so would it be better to return to all 2 ton components?
or
Replace the 2 ton compressor with a 4 ton compressor?
Any advice would be appreciated.

All componts should be matched, if the compressor is not bad why would you replace it? I can see replacing the coil to match the outdoor unit. If your house cools fine with a 2 ton why would you double your cooling (this would cause even more problems)?

If your contractor wants to replace your comp. because it "could be" damaged, it's time to find a new contractor.

What are the manufacturer, model and serial numbers of the indoor and outdoor equipment. It may be a matched system. You should be able to find it at http://www.ari.org
