Homeowner here.
So I have a Janitrol unit for 13 years that doesn't give me a hint of trouble. Who knows what goes wrong with it and I decide that I won't even have the problem diagnosed rather I'll have the whole deal replaced with a brand new Trane system. And I paid an assload of money to get good hardware cause they are the best right?
Two months later I come home to a hot house. I open up the eletronics panel in my outdoor unit and find that the compressor capacitor has exploded and sprayed capacitor spooge all over everything.
What a load of crap...
Just venting.

I agree.. It has nothing to do with Trane.. This can happen with anyone out there. it happen to my parents years ago, just put in a new cap, and everything is fine.

Me thinks it has more to do with where most of our parts are being made these days. And that ain't close by!

Kinda funny that Trane gets bashed over goodman in here for a change. But seriously theres a good chance that either unit would have had the same problem since many and I do mean alot of units I find with swollen or blown cap.'s have seen a brown out or voltage spike from the main power lines in the last 24 hours. If this happens when the units is trying to come on you can kiss that cap goodby be it old as the hills or new as a shiney new penny.

Two weeks ago I replaced a start cap, engaged the disconnect and it exploded all over the control box. Customer Standing there saying "That happens when you wire them up wrong" except I replaced wire for wire. It was marked "Made in China" and another sticker in the control box saying "Assembled In Mexico" And Sold In America! :D

Very possible but the 13 year old Janitrol next door is running and my brand new Trane isn't.
That house and my house share the same power mains.
All of the computers, Tivo, A/V hardware, big screen TV, clocks, etc etc etc are all fine.

"Proof that the brand name doesn't mean crap".
Years ago I used to brand hype, but not anymore. So much of this stuff has the same internals these days made by our invaders.

We'll I wish the Japanese and Germans would get into it. Because if they designed their HVAC anything like they design and build their cars...

I'm guessing after reading Cruller's other thread about being po'd at all of the world's HVAC techs the guy called and doesn't want to replace a capacitor on Sat under warranty. Seems silly to me, but maybe the guy has a reason.

How did you buy Trane in Florida? I thought Carrier was giving away Boats or Cars or Homes down in Florida to there Contractors, it seems most all the service company's in Florida push or sell Carrier, and I thought folks from Florida were smart I use to have a good friend that lived there, maybe it's a cult thing. :D

Mr cruller if you had taken the time to notice that I said when the unit is trying to come on in the said brownout or voltage spike. One in a thousand might be trying to start at that exact moment and yep yours might just be the one in a thousand.

As much as I'd love to make this an opportunity to.....well, you know; I can't :D
Like has been stated; it could have happened to any system at any time. You are probably right about if the parts were made in Germany or possibly Japan.

There are pro's and hacks. Look at the responces. You decide. Pro's are busy this time of year, so I'm told.

I've seen caps fail on brand new equipment and old. Serviced a 17 yo (can't tell the name or make or year or model or serial because they've all rotted off) split a/c system.Compressor was changed 10+ years ago and other than that, never touched.Changed the combo cap and it fired right up.Top off the juice about every 2 years and it chugs on along to this day.Don't know of a unit that will make that gaurantee today.Brownout/voltage may be to blame but it may have been a bad cap from day one.

If you are suggesting that those who are responding are hacks because we are not busy, you are an idiot. If I am wrongly reading your post, my apologies for calling you an idiot. In that case, you are just wrong; this is not an installer or a manufacturer issue. This is a matter of just one of those things that happen to HVAC systems, especially during peak loads when electrical capacities are fluctuating.

I consider myself half hack and half pro and there is no way i could do more work even it i wanted and i still find time to relax and get on here and chat a little,i worked a minimum of 80 hrs last week and no i dont want anymore,i surrender,I'd like to have the work but I'm a gonna try to hide for a couple of days or so and recharge. And as far as a blown cap,i heard the main reason those things blow is heat in gererall,so freon charge and system prob.comein after that, could happen to any system but thats what I talk about when somebody bashes goodman brand products, all air conditioner have to do the same thing, move heat, and they all use very similar ways of doing it,kinda like cars in a way,but the install is still and always will be the key.

What, work in attic's in the summer, work outside, in the cold winter? Ya gatta be kidding me. I'll leave that to you pro's. Robo N Icy, no flame was intended. I travel over fifty percent for my job, while on the road, 80 hr weeks are considered short. Course, what else ya gonna do on travel, my as well work.
HVAC is a hobby. I love learning from this site, even if the questions turn some sensitive pro's the wrong way.))
See Robo, I didnt jump on the Idiot responce..:))))

Well, back to the topic. Yeah the capacitor blew out. Its under warranty and the guy who installed it should have had it fixed lickity split. If he didnt, you must remember... YOU HIRED HIM, TRANE DIDN'T.
Beyond that, you are not going to tell me that your 13 year old janitrol with zero features is as quiet as the new system (errr, that is when it is running). Unless of course, all the installer did was replace the outdoor unit.

cruller - hate to tell you but the Germans produce cars that are some of the most unreliable on the road. So I don't think that is a good analogy. Just go look at consumer data and feedback of reliability issues on German cars!
dash - you are right about the Carrier perks. I know of one very large Carrier dealer/distributor down here based on an employees comments that the owners of this company get to go places some of us never have, and it's not on their dime.
Like the recent Meditranian Cruise,or better then that??Heard next year is China.
How about the cars and boats??LOL!!
