I am going to buy an American Standard 5 ton 13 seer heat pump split unit system.

I need to know if I should get a variable speed unit or a standard motor?

You may have to go higher than 13 Seer to get variable speed. I live in North Phoenix. Are you enjoying the rain, finally? :)
