Just popped the lid on a Frigidaire P7RD-030k package unit that my Techs were installing and found a Samsung window shaker looking compressor staring back at me. It made me sick. I guess I should have seen it coming. Looks like I need to rethink my choice of package units I install. Has anyone else out there seen the same with their brands?

There is Japanese technology, and then there is the misnomer of Chinese technology.

As of yet, I have not been disappointed with anything that is Japanese built.

Korea, not Japan.

How many small sealed units do you think are made in the USA?

talk to your distributor, If its like the split systems, you should be able to step up to a better unit for a very small price.

For the split Nordyne systems i can choose between a rotary compressor or spend $60 more and get a Copeland scroll. I don't know if it works the same way with their package units.

Rotaries are absolutely horrid in split systems. They might hold up a little better in factory charged package units. They don't hold up well at all to adverse operating conditions. forget to change the filter?, close too many vents?, blower motor fails?, overcharge? Hello burnout

every time I come across a burned out rotary (mostly York), they get two options
A: warranty exchange compressor, no labor warranty, if it burns out before I get back in my truck too bad.
B: Copeland recip or scroll, 1 year parts and labor warranty.

I've still not had anyone take option A

I use to change out slide valve O-rings on Hitachi Compressors 10 years ago.

Japanese make some quality stuff.

Carrier is pushing Chinese ductless crap now. " Gree "

Jap stuff is pretty bomb proof, least over here it is, even the chinese made genuine jap stuff.

Its the chinese copy parts and older style units designs they buy when the Jap company brings out the new models, think Gree is based on one of the Jap companies 90's models. Like some car manufacturers sell of old desings to the developing markets.

Worst thing with the cheap chinese stuff is no parts backup, no warranty backup, and no tech backup, oh and it never works that good even when it works.
