Just want to ask a question. What are some of the crazy problems you all have seen while in this field of work?

Today I found a unit with a bad compressor. Compression ratio was very low and the compressor was not hardly pumping. Went through the process of changing the compressor. Fired the unit back up and things weren't looking so good. Had low condensing temp and low subcooling, high suction temp and low superheat. Things were pointing toward the metering device, went to check it and it's a fixed orifice. Didn't think that could be the problem because how does a fixed orifice fail on just a straight a/c. Checked everything else and still came to the same conclusion. Come to find out there is no orifice in the fitting. This unit has ran for 7 YEARS with no metering device.

Just curious if anyone has ran into this before or even some crazier than this?

I dealt with one of those. It was a mini split in a computer room. It had apparently been charged solely by superheat with no look at subcooling. I pulled one and a half pounds out and put seven pounds and a metering device back in.

Not so weird but i recently pulled 15lbs from a small rtu that had a factory charge of 7. ..... Maybe it is weird that it went unnoticed . .
