I have a Trane 2.5 ton XL15i outside unit and 4TEE3F31 air handler and am trying to determine the startup and running load for the air conditioning mode to assist me in sizing a generator. I do not see this info in my materials left by the installer.

Thanks!

The info is on the data plates on the units.

I believe you generally size for FLA (Full Load Amps) on both indoor and outdoor units. As mentioned, it's on the nameplate.

You need a clamp meter to measure RLA, since it will vary depending on temperature conditions and airflow indoor and out. Although the unit is about 13EER, so nominally that's a COP of 3.8, so about 2200Watts at 95F for both indoor and outdoor unit combined at a steady state. Power consumption goes up at higher temps and drop at lower temps. I don't remember how indoor temperature affects it. TO be safe, just figure 2500Watts in hot weather.

This is my plate. It says "Minimum" of 17 amps...so 220 * 17 = 3740 watts, right? And I haven't checked my air handler yet.

Make sure you get a generator that can handle the inrush current when the compressor starts.

The compressor in that unit briefly pulls 63A on start up
