Hey guys........I have a K-type thermocouple for checking temp. that I use with my HS35 Fieldpiece meter. It is always about 5 degrees lower than the rest of my thermometers.
Are these type accurate?

All of my temperature probes use K type thermocouples and are very accurate.
Fluke probes and a Fluke 52II thermometer.

I have noticed that the Fluke K type termocouples do not last forever. As they get older, and more beat up, they loose their ability to accuratly produce the voltage (or is it resistance) to allow the meter to make the right read. They are pretty cheap to replace though, so it's not that big of a deal.
Oh, yeah, it is also a good idea to get you DMM / Thermometer calibrated ever once in a while. It is a test instrument, and can go "out of calilbration"...
Contact the manufacturer for more information on calibration..

on the feild piece meters there is a calabration that needs to be done. If you still have the owners manual it will tell you how to do it. pretty much you use a glass of ice water submerse the k-type clamp or wire into the cup check your reading. I think it should be like 32f. then there is an adjustment under the cover of your meter. Feild piece says this should be done when you first buy it and periodticly after.
you might get a new probe or use a known good one to calibrate your meter

I recently bought a fluke 179 and checked it in icewater... it's reading 34.6*F ....I figured they just weren't that accurate..? Now I guess It must be out of calibration.??

I emailed fluke because my pipe clamp was reading different from my K type probe, they basically said +/- 3 degrees, so the two can be six degrees apart and still be in specs.

Check the book on your HS35, you can calibrate it within a 10th of a degree.

I use the fluke k-type on my fieldpiece. Works good and is more durable than fieldpieces k-type.
Your meter needs calibrating.
I've had to prove to customers that my fieldpiece was correct and their 30 year old kmart thermometer was questionable using the cup of ice water.

those K types are for measuring on contact but are not accurate for measuring air flow.

I agree with Tempted. I use the Fluke k-type with my Fieldpiece. I do have to calibrate my Fieldpiece quite often. I don't know why it wont hold calibration like my Fluke meter does.
