I have a 15-yrear old America Standard dual-fuel heat pump. The service man just left, bad news, the extreme heat (104 degrees) apparently cooked the compressor. Don't know the cost for a new compressor, but I figure it'll be nearly $. My gut tells me that I'd be better off replacing the unit - especially being that old. I 'd appreciate your expert opinion/advise. Thanks.

There is a twist to this story. It appears the my system (compressor) will not respond at temperatures over 95, this is the third time I noticed this issue. After the temperature drops to 94/95, the compressor comes on - does this mean it is a somewhat normal issue, or should I pursue the replacement route.
Since it does cool off for evening/night comfort, I am hoping this thing will continue to work, even if it's part time, until Fall? Again, thanks in advance for your advice.

Condenser coil may be too dirty and just need cleaned.

I don't believe the"Extreme" heat killed your compressor. There's another issue.
Lots of places consistently see those temps all summer! You're obviously not 100% convinced either or you wouldn't be here asking, I'd try and get a second opinion.

I would change service comanys first and get the real problem repaired if the compressor runs and cools at 94 degees doubtfull its bad
