Texting and driving rises despite ticket campaign

the city of Los Angeles handed out 57,000 tickets for texting and driving in a period of about 3 months.

(i think the tickets are $189, you do the math of how much the city unconstitutionally robbed from the public under the guise of "safety")

a study said the cases of texting and driving have gone up since the ticket campaign.

apparently, giving the city money doesn't solve problems

i got that number from a freeway sign, the average ticket here is $200 to $400.

They are taking a weeks work from people...but those people have an increased potential to take away an entire life from someone else.

Besides...if they are taking 180-400 dollars....all the state is really taking from these people is the ability to pay their cell phone bill....which if people are willing to kill someone over a phone, they don't need it.

Heck, why stop there? Let's fine anyone drinking booze. We know for a statistical fact how much death, property damage, medical expense, busted families, fighting and physical abuse booze causes so why not charge large fines for consuming it other than in approved gin joints where you are held against your will until your breathalyzer test proves you safet to walk out onto the street with the rest of us safe people.

Of course, there are those swimming pools that drown people. Maybe we should fine them for owning pools that are not backfilled with concrete?

It's simple....don't do things that are dangerous and you won't get a ticket. Texting can wait until you are at your destination...or if it really is that important which I doubt...just pull over.

Texting while driving is bad enough where I'm from which is more rural....I couldn't imagine texting in near bumper to bumper traffic in a more urban area.

Do you mean like eating, putting on make-up, fiddling with a GPS or radio, arguing with a passenger or talking with a hands-free device. Oh, those things are legal so they must not be dangerous.

Texting while driving is dangerous but the hands-free law is bogus. It was made law due to public opinion, public pacification and greed. Not test results or data.

We in Alberta allegedly have the toughest distracted driving legislation in North America, but that still didn't stop me from getting hit by a person using a cell phone. There is no easy answer, common sense seems to be getting rarer these days... The link below has a video of someone playing the saxaphone while driving on a freeway... Go figure!

I just heard a PSA on the radio from the Penn. Governor's Office: last yr there were over 50,000 arrests for DUI in the Commonwealth. Boy, those laws and fines sure are having an impact on curbing drunk driving.

Any fines for traffic violations are just another form of taxation and have NOTHING to do with curbing activity.

Understand that when something bad goes wrong, you may have two major avenues for punishment: criminal prosecution and civil suite. Those two mechanisms may provide some relief for the offense if convicted but do little to deter or prevent crime.

The death penalty is not really all that effective at preventing people so predisposed from committing murder. It is highly effective at preventing second offenses when carried out. :cheers:
