Got one sman3 back, two weeks later, the liquid side of the manifold will not allow recovery. Any solutions? It unscrews, but will not allow refrigerant to pass through.

Sounds like the hot surface ignitor or worst case the run winding. Fieldpiece should be able to tell you more.

I heard the SMAN4 has a modulating roll out switch to solve this issue. Doug had one on the omega AK-t190 back the lcd backlight was causing back emfs to the recovery machine. An inline filter drier didn't help apparently. Doug can you further explain?

A trick I learned on the old oil fired furnaces was to jumper W to the low pressure switch on the condensing unit. Using ohm's law you can easily determine if there are any condensibles freezing up the liquid side valve on your gauge manifold. Remember to use psig or you'll be chasing your tail all day. Learned that the hard way on a hot tub heat pump, but that was R12 so it could be different on the ductulator if you're a friction rate of w.5 for the stainless flex gas line. Open up that metering device for LP for dual fuel applications. I use MAPP gas now, whole different ball of wax. Hope this doesn't aid any DIY'ers using a pittsburgh machine....

I think one the tanks in my cache of R22 may have a slight leak. I store 50 50"b tanks in my office down in the basement, which is where I have been all day. Been down here working on mailers that I want to get mailed out before the 4th of July. After a long day of watching fireworks and drinking beer I want my customers to know that I'm available on holidays should their Goodman's fail. I service other brands too. Hope you all have a safe 4th of July next week!

My apologies for the creative posts and their irrelevance to the sman3's issue that the OP has encountered.
The extremely large pink elephant in the room begs these questions of hypocrisy:
Am I at such a level of inferiority to that of the hvaclover that I must do as told despite the congruent irrelevance exhibited? Is it anymore appalling that I post outlandish diagnostics to a question asked on the 20th page of a thread already off course with visual examples of sponge bob wearing a latex glove and if I recall (I'm not going back to verify) a grown man in a tutu?
Surely I'm not the only one to find the humor in the innocent randomness of my posts in a thread that essentially took the wrong turn 15 miles ago.
Again, my apologies. Let us get back to the banter with hvaclover bashing digicool and Doug because of his repeated pleas for free rubbers being denied...or whatever the hell her majesty wants to talk about.

I've gotten my vacuum jar to 600 microns running. It will not hold that vacuum, but it does one H**L of a job demonstrating vapor pressure basics to schoolkids and drying out wet phones.
I've made some improvements to the design, but haven't put the micron gauge on it since.

I won't pull a smartphone or any other device with a fancy hi-res screen into a deep vacuum again. I did this the a blackberry several years ago and damaged the screen permanently. It wasn't severe, but there was a BB sized black spot on the screen.
Since DC are water resistent, I wouldn't worry a whole lot about having to dehydrate them in a vacuum. :.02:

Perfect vacuum would only put 14.7 psi of pressure with reference to atmospheric pressure, so I don't see it hurting anything.
Would make a great video!

A nearly new fieldpiece meter got me the shock of a lifetime after "proving" a 480v circuit to be dead when, in fact, it was not.
I threw it away and, from that point on, did more research and bought the best tools that I could.
You could not pay me to carry one, let alone convince me to pay the kind of money that I hear they cost for one.
Great for fieldpiece that they are selling a ton of meters. Hoo-ray for them. Hope they don't fail the guys who are staking their reputations on them like mine did me.

Sad night for me last night.
On a late night service call with my SMAN 3 connected to the condenser getting SC and SH when I had to run to the truck. As I'm walking back from the truck, the H/O calls me and I head inside to see what the concern was. Well, after I calm the guy and his wife down and tell them to sit back and let me work a little, I head back outside and discover that it has started to rain. I run to the rear of the house to protect my gauges and when I get to them I notice that they're reading over 400 psig ON BOTH lines!
Disconnect them and put them in the truck. Later as I'm packing up to leave, I turn them on to see if everything is okay and discover that they're reading pressure without being attached to a line! They even read pressure without the hoses attached!!! Attempted to calibrate them and now the high side just reads OL while the low side is still fluctuating.
I just hope that my local supply house allows me to return them and get the Testos. :gah:
Call Travis @ Tech Support they will take care of you... they are awesome! :troll2:

You guys know I have much resect for you but ya'll make me puke when you get personal about stupid stuff like that.
Not sure if the pro comments were directed at me but I have taken it that way after reading more of this ****. I have read critical posts about Digi-Cool product from GF before so "never" is not correct. Also know plenty of techs from Texas that have Digi-Cool product so not sure what all of that is about.
What really bugs me is the bashing product comment from a professional.
Is RSES professional GF? An organization that gushes professionalism that has your full support right?
Last month they published a three page article not unlike this thread IMO only the circumstances were flopped with names changed and or omitted to protect their much needed advertising dollars.
It couldn't have been more clear to me they were writing about J/B and testo in the article and blatantly endorsing the relatively new Fieldpiece SMAN3 as a superior product painstakingly engineered to to be the best available.
The Fieldpiece Product Manager (Russ) even chimed in about the techs troubles with Digital Manifolds and talked about the other companies issues with the Digital Manifolds and suggested how they have poorly dealt with the issues.
Is it professional …I don't know but I do know its how a lot of human beings behave. As in the RSES article and in a thread like this one we discus and yuck it up especially guys busting their hump in this line of work who have laid their hard earned dollar on something someone they heard was great. Some guys get a little passionate especially after they have been on the wrong end of failed products I guess. You say the DM is doing great someone has obviously listened but did not hear everything ..... we are 0 for 2 at our shop.
As far as what has gone on in this thread … Some quotes from the RSES article
Directed at one of the failed manifolds engineering department "Guys, do you know what business we're in? We work in rigorous conditions, mechanical machinery -- I mean, you can't baby it. Either the instrument is built for the conditions or it's not."
And at the end Russ offers technicians should be thorough when doing research when choosing a product.
Yes I see these threads as research call it what you want. I believe techs deserve to have a place to freely talk about these things and it seems we have been allowed as much here recently which I'm thankful for (except for one guy, sorry Clover it must have been something behind the curtain for getting bant cause I don't see the problem).
So again did rain kill this unit maybe it got struck by lighting I don't know. He said it was in the rain and I do know the SMAN has plenty of holes to let rain into the case. I'm sure if the SMAN has a issue with being used in the rain they would let us know about it right or say go ahead and use it in the rain and if one dies will just replace it and say they are working on it and until then protect our investment from the rain.

SMAN3 still running strong after 1 year. We both have one set of them. We clean them once a week regardless of amount of use. Granted we rely on our analog class 1 gauges 75% of the time. But they are used at least once a day. On both trucks. No problems. Guess we have gotten lucky but we are in Missouri and not florida and we never have exposed them to a extremely harsh environment or cooked them in direct sunlight. We aren't telling everyone they need to buy a set (not that impressed with them) but they work and get the job done that's all we can say about them.

What happens when you cook them in direct sunlight?

You sure the yoke don't ooze out of the micron sensor that has a lower max rating than the pressure transducers?

Shoot, the micron gauge isn't even accurate. Who cares if the yolk leaks out?
