View Full Version : New siding caused problems???

I have a question - I don't know much about airconditioning so please bear with me.

I have a 2 story house. Two of the bedrooms upstairs face the east and two face the west.

The two bedrooms facing the west are very hot in the summer. I have owned the house for 7 years and didn't really notice the problem for the first few years.

The two bedrooms facing the east are "ok" - but are definitely hotter than the downstair - and when you shut the door for any length of time the get even hotter.

I put new siding on the house 3 years ago. It was either 3 or 4 years ago that the "hottness" of the upstairs really increased. So I can't remember if the problem happened right after or right before the new siding.

Could the new siding have restricted the air flow in the attic and therefore caused the upstairs to be hotter?

If so, how can I determine this is the issue so that I can have the siding guys fix it??

Any information would be appreciated

Did you close off some vents? Put your hand on the ceiling and see if it feels like heat is radiating down from the attic into the rooms.

It is common for siding contractors to cover up gable and soffit vents with slotted siding that is far more restrictive that the original vents. These slotted vents don't comply with the building codes, as they reduce the net free area of the vents to less than what is required by code.

Have you had the system serviced? A siding nail in a lineset will cause problems.....

However, don't be looking to blame the siding guys on a 3 year old mistake. You should have had your a/c checked sooner.

I'll bet the unit hasn't been serviced since the siding went up or even BEFORE THAT!
She is just looking for a reason the unit isn't cooling well and hasn't looked into the mirror yet.

My Lennox HVAC system didn't need servicing for around 22 years! What's wrong with that?

Dark siding? troyorr's restricted venting is something you might want to check into.

Funny, the CO monitor next to the furnace, one upstairs and a Fluke CO-220 register nothing! Gosh, you guys are so touchy. Your giving yourselves and your industry a bad name, if it doesn't have it already!

The original poster is probably like my single female neighbor. If she wants to hire someone for a service, she asks in her church group for referals as she doesn't want to get ripped-off.

I forgot to add that this system was inspected some years after installation and the guy doing it said that there was crack in the heat exchanger. A call to owner of the company was placed and his answer was the guy was new, made a mistake, nothing wrong with your furnace. Great service call, hey?

OMG!! are you saying that because someone is a Church member contractor you won't get ripped off? Well I have attended Church for over 30 years, and I can tell you right now they are the some of the worse, and that is why no one but the Pastor even knows I am in the a/c business and he calls the company that does the Church's a/c for his home.

Wptski - I guess you drive your car as well till it brakes: never change oil, check brakes…
You are not willing to pay a little for regular HVAC maintenance now, you will pay me the big bucks later…
But as a pro, I can not recommend that approach.

Maybe she attends a better church than you do? I edited my post above, it's really good, read the last paragraph.

Well the Church happens to be the people not the building and you probably right she probably attends a better Church than I do because my church is probably the only one with contractors that will rip you off, I really doubt that any others have folks that would do that. :D

No, I have my oil changed at 3,000mi and they check all its vital signs too. I also connect a OBD-II scanner to the PCM looking for pending codes before they become trouble codes. I load the results into my PC and compare it to the last scan looking for possible future problems.

What's regular HVAC maintenance? Give me a list of exactly would you do for a maintenance service call?
