It is very hot snd humid in the south right now and my unit seems to be cooling fine but the in room temp always rises above setpoint and the unit runs longer.I have a hunter thermostat, could their be a possibility it may be giving inaccurate readings? if so what is the best thermo. you can buy in a store?

either your A/C unit cant keep up with the hot days down here or maybe your Refrigerant isnt charged properly.
is your Filter Clean ? if it is call a service company for a A/C Tuneup let them findout the real problem. thermostat probaly not a issue

Honeywell and White Rodgers I think are in some stores, if you buy off the internet you may find more of the top line stuff. I picked a Climatouch for myself, and it supposed to be real accurate, but I doubt that anything is wrong with the thermostat you have now.
When its hot and humid the AC has a LOT more work to do, cool the air and remove moisture, so its going to run longer, and when its the hottest etc the temperature may go up a few degrees.
I like toys so I bought myself a couple cheap digital thermometers, and walk around checking temperatures. Oregon Scientific makes some neat little meters that show temperature and humidity, and it can be fun to check the air going into the return grill vs the air coming out the vents.

First off, that Hunter stat isn't very popular among pros. That said, it sounds like your system needs a good cleaning/charge adjustment/checked out. The stat doesn't sound like the problem here. Have a system cleaning done, and don't waste your money on the $39.99 special.
