My interesting 38SQ (R-22)Carrier Heat Pump system circa 1987. Particular because it has a separate insulated box for the compressor and electronics. Installed in a 4500 sq. ft. home in Montreal, Quebec. One Lennox Sentinel EC10 A/H for the main floor and finished basement and the other for the second floor. 51,200 BTU/h electric backup in each A/H (we have VERY cheap electricity here in Quebec - rarely used, however). Only had minor repairs over the years, new fan motor in one condenser and one A/H and new contactors.

Meh... They vent upwards and the shrubs aren't terribly thick - they may look it, though.

It really doesn't matter if they blow up or sideways.......I like to see alot more clearance around the condensor than that.At least enough to walk NORMALLY around it without hitting any thing.JMHO.

Nice capacitors :). Always amazed by the function.

Remember, cold air falls. In heating mode, the bushes are still trapping a pocket of refrigerated air around those units.

I was made a believer in clearance around outdoor equipment by watching the outdoor temperature sensor on two of my systems fluctuate when the system runs (both vented upwards). In both cases, the ambient sensors would read accurately when the system was at rest, but if it's running in heat mode, the ambient temperature in that area falls several degrees, and in cooling mode, it rises several degrees. Hot air does tend to rise, but even that is not enough to keep the heat from influencing the sensor, several feet away and about 1' below the top of the outdoor unit.
