How does the Copeland Scroll UltraTech compressor work? Is it mechanically modulating, muliple speed, or variable speed? I'm told the turndown is 67% but that doesn't seem like much. Any info would be appreciated as I couldn't find much on the net for specifics.

Picture the scroll of a single stage unt,gas enters at the outer edge of the scroll.

Now picture a bypass soleniod inside the compressor, that when open allows the gas to enter the scroll, about a third of the way from the edge of the scroll. That's how low stage works and capacity is around 67% of high.

Solenoid is energized to go to high stage.

So if that hermetically sealed solenoid valve dies or gets stuck, you're screwed, right?

True and it would be stuck in low speed.

It is a DC solenoid and Copeland feels failures will not be an issue.
We have 4 of them that have been installed for a little over thre years with no problems ,time will tell.
