I live in a condo built in 1981 that is 1075 sq ft. My original heatpump stopped working. I took the cover off and found that the three wires going to the compressor melted. I believe its the compressor windings? Had a tech come and he said needs new compressor. We are in the middle of summer and in the middle of trying to sell our condo. I am looking for a cheap fix. I am not looking to get anything out of the unit beyond working so that I can sell the condo. I know I'm cheap.

First question
Should I just replace the compressor or the whole unit? Compressor only then whats the cost likely to be and is one available somewhere?

Had a few estimates on replacing the unit and was told that the unit and air handler were too old to mate up and that both needed replacing. The air handler works fine. No one seemed to be able to get me the accurate tonnage on either also. I want to make sure I am replacing what needs to be replaced. Here are the model numbers and maybe you guys can tell me accurate info.
Condenser--hs03sacw the three could be a six.
Air handler--aj120bw

They are westinghouse

Could you please tell me the tonnage and seer if available and whether or not I can replace only the condenser and not both. The various techs said the size unit was no longer available to match the air handler hence the need to replace both. Thanks in advance for your help. Oh yeah I'm in central california.

You could put in a $88 window unit from walmart and just knock a few thousand off your asking price.

Didn't your realtor tell you about the home warranties that are FREE until the house sells and then offered as part of the sale to the buyer?

If you don't fix the unit using a matched set you better hope the home inspector and buyers realtor are pretty stupid and don't check central air.

This is a time to uncheap, find a decent contractor and put in a system that will ADD to the sales value of the condo.
