I recently had a Rheem 4-ton 14 seer compressor and a matched Rheem variable speed airhandler installed (replaced a very old unit). The air handler is not being used for heat. It is only being used for A/C and is installed in my attic. I have two questions regarding this.

1. I purchased a ritetemp thermostat (model 8085S which can be seen at http://www.ritetemp-thermostats.com/8085C.html) with a built in humidistat to take advantage of the on demand dehumidification feature of the air handler and can not figure out how to properly wire ODD terminals and the thermostat/humidistat.

2. My installer re-used the existing duct work. The air handlers blower motor is fairly close to a room duct. As a result I have a lound swooshing wind noise (at varying pitches) coming from the duct. Could I possible remedy this by moving the connection to the duct further down the main trunk line or using a larger duct? Should I consider setting the air handler to 50% of its nominal air flow? This should remedy the air flow noise but would it create other issues with the coil possibly freezing up or the unit not cooling the house properly?

Any suggestion on the two above questions would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion, and not being rude, is to call the guys who installed the system. Let them do the job so it's done right.

Call your installer and have them come out and answer your questions and hook up the thermostat. Its something that a consumer can EASILY cause expensive bits to go poof, since there must be half a dozen different ways to wire them up depending on brand and model.

Variable speed blower motors are set to move a specific amount of air in cfm (cubic feet per minute) to match the heating or cooling function you are using. For cooling there are two speeds that are important, max efficiency, and about 80% of that speed for max humidity control. Messing with that speed is NOT the way to fix duct noise, bigger duct or maybe different type of grille. What sort of filters are you using?
