I called a recommended company first thing this morning. I guess I got the guy at home. I actually got to talk with the owner of the company and explained my situation with the ductboard box w/ the opening and the condition of the coil. He said pretty much everything that you all said on here. He said he would have no problem coming out and servicing my unit, fixing what might be wrong, etc. He also said that I probably don't need a new unit and that the other guy was trying to snow me. Anyway, he seemed VERY knowledgeable and gave me very good customer service over the phone. That is the first step to a good business relationship. He is going to come out this afternoon and look at the system, give me a quote and let me know when he can fix it up right for me. Just his quote to take care of the cleaning that needs done wasn't cheap, but if he can fix me up right and get me in proper working order for less than a new unit, I'll be happy. I know that it's a specialized field (or should be, anyway) and dont' have any problems paying a professional to do professional work. I feel very happy that I got in touch with this guy so far. He's been in business for a long time and so far seems to know his stuff. I will let you all know what comes of it and am hoping that I have found my "a/c guy" for all future work. Just wanted to tell you all thanks so much for your input. Without being able to ask you all questions and get good honest answers, I still would feel like I don't have the slightest idea what to do, and might have ended up replacing a four year old unit that doesn't need replaced. This forum is a real benefit to the homeowner who needs some guidance and I'm glad you are all here. Thanks again, and I will let you know what happens. Thanks so much for all your help. I really appreciate it.

see there, we're not all bad.
But those few on 20/20, or Dateline make us look bad.
