View Full Version : Probably a dumb question

I have a 3 ton American Standard split unit that is roughly 10 yrs old. This afternoon, the pipes iced over and the unit quit working. I flipped the breakers and pulled the fuse next to the outside unit and put it back in. Soon after, it started back up. I turned the outside unit off and let the fan run for a couple hours to get the ice out. Water was pouring out of the air handler and actually filled the drip pan enough that the water was running through the drain pipe directly into the garage. Later on, I turned the air conditioner back on to see if it worked and let it run for a few hrs. The only thing that seems odd now (at least to me) is condensation is forming on the outside of the air handler where the freon line connects. Is this normal?

I assume my unit has most likely lost it's charge and am currently getting quotes from local repairmen.

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like you may be correct.

Yes, it's normal for the larger pipe to form condensation, that's why this pipe is always insulated. If it's the small pipe that's a problem.

If the pipe is condensating the unit may not have lost it's refrigerant charge completely.

If the unit is found to be low on gas the leak should be found and repair.

But keep in mind there are also allot more reasons why your unit may be icing-up and this can only be determined by a trained professional.

dirty evap coil or dirty filers will cause a system to ice...
