I have recently had a contractor in assessing my home for a new furnace and a/c install. One of the things recommeneded was the expansion of cold air returns on my main floor and on my second storey. My current setup has returns that are approx. 6-8 inches high and 30 inches wide at floor level on the main floor and similar returns on the second storey (though narrower) at ceiling height. The 2 on the second floor are really just holes leading to the same duct on either side of a wall.
It was suggested that these returns be expanded in size to accomodate more return air. I do believe there is somewhat lesser air flow in some of the second floor rooms in my house but I am skeptical that bigger holes leading to the same return air duct is simply a "feel-good" recommendation since I expressed interest in obtaining better circulation.
Any professional opinions?
TIA
