View Full Version : Replace compressor unit or entire system?

Thank you in advance for your help!!

I have 2 systems in my home, one gas furnace and one heat pump. The heat pump (the compressor unit and the attic air handler) was added 5 1/2 years ago during a total remodel of the home and serves the added on Master bedroom and one other bedroom. It is a Payne 2-ton R22-based SEER13 system. The heat pump compressor just died. I have been told that our Payne system is very basic (we've only lived here 2 years so I didn't choose the system). Both systems have been serviced twice/year since we've lived here.

The cost to replace the compressor is essentially identical to the cost to replace the outdoor unit. My question is whether to A) replace the outdoor unit only (with a Trane XB13 R22-based heat pump matched to the current air handler), or B) replace the entire system (new outdoor Trane unit and attic air handler, 2-ton R410A-based Trane XR13 with a variable speed air handler [effective SEER=14, per the technician]). The cost difference between these choices is $ ($ vs $).

We plan to be in the house for at least 5-10 years. I would think that the current attic air handler should last a while, but then again wouldn't have expected the compressor to die this quickly. If I replace only the outdoor unit, I will be hoping my air handler works for many more years. Also, I am unclear of the ramifications of partially replacing an R22-based system. Is it time for us to move to the R410A?

Thank you. -Kyle

So what is the Payne warranty on the Compressor?

Need to find out what caused the compressor to die in less then 6 years, and have that fixed also.

Thanks for your replies.

@dan sw fl: 5-year warranty...just missed it.

@beenthere: Not sure what caused the compressor to fail. It is constantly tripping the circuit breaker, but I don't know much beyond that.

Any thoughts about replacing just the outdoor unit (plus figuring out what caused the compressor to fail) vs replacing the whole system. Is R22 vs R410A something I should be thinking about in my decision (e.g. related to future repair/replacement costs and availability of R22)?

2 tons for 2 bedrooms sounds a bit large. How big is the addition. Could be its too big for the addition, or the ducts are too small for it.

R22 has doubled in price this year alone.

Twilly says could it just be a bad compressor and no installation problems? Just sayin.

How many compressors have you had die in less then 6 years. And there was no reason other then it was a defective compressor. Just asking.

Mr. Bill started a brand new UAPM-036 Ruud up 3 weeks ago, and the compressor was "grounded" from the get go, bout had to change my underwear when I plugged in the disconnect and it shot fire out of it like a lightning strike. :gah:

Had a DOA compressor or 2 already.

How many times have you had that in your 30 some years in the trade?

Twilly says not many. But a few, just sayin

So basically, its a pretty good bet that something took out the compressor, and its not a factory compressor defect. And at least an outside cause should be looked for, instead of just replacing the compressor or condense. And walking away.

Twilly doesn't totally disagree, Twilly just saying it ain't always pilot error.
