Curious what this could be. Older nat-gas forced-air furnace, small unit/small home. Very short ductwork. No odors ever noted before. Recently, when heat is kicked on, immediately get a VERY strong smell in the heated air, smells like old turpentine or paint thinner. Any ideas what could cause this? No smells in the furnace cabinet/closet, or burner area. Only in the heated air. Odor permeates entire home almost instantly. Have never smelled anything like this with an HVAC system. It exhausts through the roof, but even if something came down that pipe, it wouldn't/shouldn't cause an odor in the heated output air right? Hmmm. Anyone ever experineced this before? Thanks.

Cracked heat exchanger. Shut off furnace and call for service immediately!

Sounds like someone or something has gotten inside your ductwork an gotten next to the heat exchanger. I'd call and have this unit checked over.:.02:
