View Full Version : oversized air handler?? TXV??

Hello,

I am a new poster even though I have lurked for a few weeks. I have picked up quite a lot of good info. As such, I have a couple of questions that some of the multitude of knowledgeable members may be able to shed some light on.

I have been quoted a Goodman GSH14024 two ton heat pump system matched with a AEPF3036 variable speed air handler to replace an older system Carrier system. As I understand it, this is a matched set but according to Goodman's website, the air handler is selectable from 1200 to 1600 cfm. Isn't this too much airflow for a two ton system, especially with respect to humidity control (eastern NC locale)? I am assuming I would need no more than 800 cfm. Are the specs wrong or am I missing something here?

Also, according to the Goodman website, a TXV valve would need to be installed to obtain the ARI certified SEER ratings where none was quoted. Is the lack of a TXV that big a deal? I know the expansion valves are supposedly more efficient but does it really matter with a properly charged unit?

I have raised these issues with the contractor but he has not gotten back up with me even after a couple of messages were left.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to know whether I have inappropriately questioned the dealer's professional judgement (even though it seems I may have already done so). Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

1200-1800/2 = 600-900 cfm per ton = YEP
txv = SEER = YEP
txv = proper charge = efficiency = YEP

I wonder why the contractor didn't choose the AEPT air handler, which has a TXV as standard equipment?

Thanks for the reply. However, I'm confused. If I assume you too mean that 600-900 cfm per ton is indeed too much airflow, then why does Goodman rate this combination with a TXV as a matched set (ARI # 890134)?

Good question. Cheaper perhaps, is there a major cost difference between the AEPF and AEPT fan coils?

Of course, the matching TXV coil is the AEPT036 which brings up the original concern of too much airflow. It has a selectable range from 1200-1800 cfm. Why is this considered a matched set and why is is ARI rated? I can't help but feeling I am missing something here.
