I am looking to replace my 60+ yr old gravity furnace. I am a little concermed about the cost. All of the pipe is wrapped with asbestos tape that has been painted over. Is this a removal project I can fo myself? If not can any of you give me a rough cost for removal and replacement please. have an 800sq ft home and it needs to be updated.

THen you can talk about the replacement of the trunk duct and how it will connect to existing, buried or inaccessible risers/ branches

Asbestos is safer where it's at, undisturbed, as apposed to scattered about in a basement so if its gotta go, it needs to be abated correctly. An abatement company is set up to do it correctly, you probably are not. Safety trumps price.
Sorry, pricing not allowed in the forum, call around.

We cannot give you any kind of guess as to cost. Painting the old asbestos pipe covering will keep the asbestor from entering the air. You can remove this yourself, but then you're faced with what to do with it after you've torn it out as most landfills will not take the debris. Also you could create a health hazard when removing this stuff. I'd get a local HVAC contractor to come and look it over and give you some advice. I'd definitely look into a new system as gravity units are horrible energy wasters!

You may even have some trouble finding a highly reputible company.
If I know you removed asbestos from a home, by yourself, I would require air sampling tests before I worked there.

Thank you all for you comments. Im sure many of you get tired of the noods coming and asking questions, but I come to forums like this to seek the knowledge of professionals. I do keep safety in mimd at all times! I was very hesitant about doing something like this on my own and I do not plan on taking this project on without a contractor.
Now the next thing is to make a few calls around the area and find a reputable abatement contractor. If any of you know of one in southern wisconsin or northrern illinois, shoot me a pm!
