mom is moving into a new house and before she moves in, I've offered (since I'm the located closest of all siblings) to resolve installation of new package unit.
only request she asked me was to maintain house at below 55% relative humidity at all times as she likes house temps at 80-82F
the new house requires a package unit so I've shopped Carrier/American Std/Trane and my conclusions are as follows:
1. None of the 3 or 4 ton package (electric) units have dedicated dehumidification (BK screw on ECM board)
2. She needs a whole house dehumidifier
3. I'll pick a two stage, variable speed unit
4. Thermostat will be Totaltouch/Climatouch/Totalline
I wish there was a package unit that can run independent dehumidification as installing a whole house DH will require getting into the attic and tie-in to ducts plus condensate drip line. If there was a package capable of DH she would have all components outside the house with no need to tear open the existing ducts. Mom does not want a free-standing DH unit inside house as it generates heat and noise.
My top pick so far is trane xl1600, VS, dual compressors 1.5&4.0 ton but it can't be wired for DH. Having Comfort-R and VS alone won't cut it for mom. I spoke with my local trane FSR and got hints of new models perhaps having this capability but I don't know if they are on the market now and we don't want to wait until the end of summer. If I knew that it's just a matter of 2 or 3 months, then I would wait.
