Was curious as to what this is? It's made by Honeywell, mounted about 1' off the floor in a finished basement. Also when I turned the dial, an alarm, about 6" from the ceiling above it went off..loud.

It's a social experiment to if you could resist fiddling with the dial on the curious looking red box on the wall. :p

Looks like an alarm for high ambient. What was the scale of the numbers on the dial?
I have seen them in older communication vaults. Never heard of one in a home, but then again, I don't do residential.

We call them farmstats up here. Heavy duty thermostat, good for dirt and dusty conditions. Sounds like they are using it as a low temp alarm.

I think the numbers on the dial were like normal t stats but didn't get a good look. As soon as that alarm sounded I jumped a foot and almost ruined my draws lol. It didn't shut off right away either when I turned the dial back.

Haha I just couldn't resist! That'd be a funny thing to set-up at the shop. Something no ones seen before hooked to an alarm with a "don't touch" sign or wherever.

My guess would be a flood sensor or freeze sensor, but the alarm would do no good if your not home.unless it sends the alarm to an off site location in the event your not there to here it

Its a heat only farm stat. They use them in farrowing houses and barns and such. I think Honeywell still makes them.

Sounds a bit more high tech than those Winter Watchmen that turned on a lamp.
